Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)It is important that you be well prepared for your upcoming surgery. Below is a list of frequently asked questions. Please also review the Patient Information section of this website for detailed instructions. What is an ambulatory surgical center? An ambulatory surgical center is a convenient and cost-effective facility for surgeries that do not require a hospital inpatient admission. While a stay in a large hospital can sometimes be stressful, an ambulatory surgical center offers patients personal care in a safe, comfortable environment. What time is my surgery? We will call you the day before your surgery to confirm your arrival time at SMSC. What should I do if something comes up and I need to cancel my surgery? Please call SMSC as soon as possible. If you call after-hours, an answering service will take your message. Will I be able to drive after my surgery? If your surgery requires anesthesia, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery as you will not be allowed to drive. You may not take a taxi or public transportation. This policy is for your own safety and we cannot make any exceptions. However, if your procedure involves local anesthesia, you will be able to drive yourself home. How do I know if my insurance company will cover my surgery? We will help you contact your insurance carrier to review your benefits and determine if pre-authorization is required. If you need assistance with insurance questions, please contact our billing department and someone will be happy to help you. What should I do the day before surgery? The Patient Information section discusses preparation, recovery and what you can expect on the day of your surgery. Will my family be able to visit me immediately after my procedure? Yes. However, we suggest that you have no more than one or two family members visit you during the postoperative phase. We are happy to give periodic updates to family members waiting in reception. What should I bring the day of surgery? Bring your insurance identification cards with you on the day of your surgery. If special financial arrangements are necessary, please call to speak to someone in the SMSC billing office prior to admission. Please be sure to bring any paperwork given to you by your surgeon including a list of any medications, supplements, herbal preparations or vitamins that you are currently taking. If applicable, you should bring your healthcare power of attorney and/or guardianship papers. Please do not bring any valuables or jewelry with you on the
day of your surgery. This includes rings, earrings, watches,
necklaces and money. While we do our best to safeguard your
belongings, they are best secured at home. |
